AAPB's 52nd Annual Scientific Meeting

A unique in-person RETREAT and learning experience...

Reconnection is imminent! It is just postponed due our concern for the safety of our community. AAPB invites you to "thrive together" at the 52nd Annual Scientific Meeting on March 23-26, 2022 at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas, Irving, Texas.

The program of events and registration will be available NO LATER than December 2021. We encourage you to make plans early to attend the 2022 Annual Scientific Meeting. We all have a lot of catching up to do!

A Special Message from the AAPB Board of Directors...

The Board of Directors wants to address questions about the plans for our scheduled conference in Irving, Texas, in March 2022, given the political climate and recent legislation regarding abortion rights. Across two meetings, the Board vigorously debated the issues and concerns at length. In the end, we decided to hold the meeting in Texas, but we feel our members will benefit from an explanation.

We admire the passion and compassion of our members for other human beings. This is a noble trait, core to all in the health and service professions. The decision to hold our meeting in Texas should neither be viewed as a political statement nor as in conflict with a response to any one political event—whether it be police brutality in Minnesota, riots at the Capitol in Washington DC, violence against Asian Americans in Florida, or laws limiting abortions in Texas.

At our core, AAPB is a scientific community and not a political advocacy group. Our mission is to promote and represent the science and practice of self-regulation, enhance health and performance, and improve health and the quality of life through research, education, and practice. We actively chose meeting locations based primarily on members' preferences, costs, and favorable weather. We enter into agreements with properties two to three years in advance, with a significant financial consequence for cancellation. We can cancel for public health emergencies, as we did in 2020 and 2021. However, as an organization, we cannot modify or cancel these arrangements due to any recent political or social reasons.

We are all aware of the significant opportunities and benefits of meeting face-to-face. The ability to connect in person helps us feel included, trusted, and part of something bigger than ourselves. It provides us the opportunity to contribute to the success of the gestalt of our profession. Like many relatively small organizations, AAPB is facing significant challenges. Postponing the 2020 and 2021 Annual Meetings was the right decision, given the safety issues, but stressed the financial health of AAPB. Gathering together in person will inject new energy into all of us, as individuals and as an organization.

Again, we respect all of our members and, given the recent events, want you to know the reasons for the Board’s decision in this matter. Now that we have our decision, you can expect a refreshed program to be unveiled in the next few weeks. We hope to see you in March 2022 to reconnect and begin to “thrive together” again.
It is a pleasure to serve you,
AAPB Board of Directors

Meeting Attendees: Watch Out for This Room-Booking Scam
The website Meetings and Conventions recently posted an article on the subject of “room poaching.” Hotel-room poachers are third-party housing companies that profit by booking meeting attendees and exhibitors outside the official housing block. These pirates pose as the official purveyor of a block of hotel rooms for a meeting or use various tactics to convince meeting attendees to make their reservations through an unofficial company. It’s not a new problem, but it is a growing concern among meeting professionals. In some cases, attendees are booked at a lower-tier hotel far from the shuttle route; in others, they arrive at their hotel to discover their cards have been charged but there are no reservations in their names. Associations may also end up paying costly attrition fees when a reserved block of rooms is not used. Read more.
